SYNBOX CONCEPT

If an adult is asked to or match each image of the upper group to those in the lower group, certainly he can do it without any difficulty. Because adults certainly can identify each of those images easily and match them.

English sentence can be analogized as a cluster of words called elements, which each has specific function, role and position in a sentence to jointly construct an understood meaning. By sentence mapping in the process of translation from English into Indonesian, we can identify each element or group of words for their role in the sentence and what the specific meaning conveyed. By identifying elements or groups of words, their function and role in the sentences, we can also build new sentences correctly either to write, speak or translate from Indonesian into English.

Indonesian people, customarily unconsciously use translating process either mentally or literally in writing and reading or even building English sentences in speaking. The problem due to many non equivalences between English and Indonesian languages with regard to type of expression and composition, sometime distract the process of that translation. SPO concept can bridge the non equivalences since it is a universal structure of sentences that is applicable for both languages and can be used to identify and explain the elements of sentence.It is useful as the MIND MAP of English Sentences.

SYNBOX, an adaptation with some improvement of SPO concept, which has already been well known, can function like the boxes above. To map the English sentences we use cages of function (syntactic function) called SYNBOX to classify the function, position and role of sentence elements as follows:

To build an English sentence using this concept, at first, you just need to identify whether a word or group of words is categorized as noun (noun), verb (verb/to be), adverb or adjective. If this identification can be established, you are only required to put them based on functional cage or in accordance with the box of function to build a sentence correctly. The next stage is to determine the appropriate diction to the meaning to be expressed. below is one of Synbox Concept for building complex sentence that we use in our course to facilitate writing, reading and translating practices.

Beside the above concept, there are two other concepts which are very useful to ease building sentence  namely Synbox for tenses and Synbox for Noun Phrase.

Indeed English is not just a matter of structure, vocabulary. There are other skills like speaking and listening. But they can only be mastered with practice and keep reading. By mastering this concept, reading and speaking will be easier and enjoyable. By enjoying reading and practicing your vocabulary could be improved and the sentence styles can be achieved.
